"What is the meaning of this city?" |
When the stranger asks,
"What is the meaning of this city?
Do you huddle close together because you love each other?"
What will you answer?
"We all dwell together
To make money from each other?" or
"This is a community?"
- T. S. Eliot
"We all dwell together To make money from each other?" - so true. I have impression that all people around me behave like that. They find happiness in someone's misery. Only money is important and materialistic stuff like expensive cars, big houses, expensive clothes etc.
ReplyDeleteCommunity is so important. The traditional ways of building community are fading. As I modify my own belief system, it becomes harder to identify with a group. I keep my opinions to myself most of the time because the cultures I encounter would judge me or think I am crazy. Our focus at church has been to seek justice and mercy and walk humbly. Simple living fits into that so well.
ReplyDeleteI am lucky enough to have found great community where I live - in an Australian university town of about 25,000 people. It's not too big, and not too small. Annie, you might find like-minded souls at places like your local community garden, the dog walking park, or perhaps a sustainable living group in your town. I have made some great friends who readily share - their time, expertise, good food and resources. And not a dollar ever changes hands - wonderful!

I've struggled for many years to find folks to huddle together with. I have some fresh ideas and getting ready to make another effort at it. Thanks Madeleine, good ideas.
ReplyDeleteI find the same is true Annie, the older I get and the more I learned about simple living, the more I modify mt beliefs and values, the harder it becomes to find a group or community. I'm not mainstream. I dislike shopping very much! And corporate jobs!
Love this huddling together space on NBA!
