Happy Cows Are Living Cows

This is humane treatment of animals.
When a popular restaurant chain, started in the Canadian province of Alberta, decided not to source their beef there, they said it was because it wasn't certified as humane. But surely they know that there is no such thing as "humane meat", certified or not.

Well there is, actually. It is the meat that is alive, and stays alive. How can killing something ever be humane? Something that would rather live ends up dead either way.

There is a butcher somewhere called The Happy Cow. Isn't a happy cow one that is running wild and free, munching on grass and roaming at will? Isn't a happy cow a living cow being scratched by a human?

There are many reasons not to eat meat, including fish. For me the greatest concern is the part surrounding killing things. I am not into that. But when you add how massively inefficient the whole process is, plus the health results of eating meat, it makes less and less sense.

Some people say that humans "have to" eat meat. Like to stay alive. Obviously this is not a true statement. Paul McCartney, dedicated vegetarian since 1975, is giving energetic 3 hour concerts at 73 years of age as we speak.

You might like meat, but no one needs meat.

If one believes that vegetarian diets are bland or boring, they have never tried dishes from India. Traveling there introduced Linda and I to the tasty tastiness of India's meatless cuisine. When we got home we decided that we did not want to, or need to, eat meat.

I would be lying if I said I do not miss some meats. First of all, meat is easy. It is a fast hit of protein. Most of us in the West only know meat based diets, so it is not surprising leaving meat behind is so difficult. But once the transition takes place, you may wonder why there is all the fuss about meat.

Second, meat is tasty. Funny that the meats I crave every once in a while, are the worst ones for your health. Bacon, sausage, and smoked meats are yummy. So yummy. They are also linked to cancer. Thinking about that adds to my armour that defends me from Big Meat.

Plus I have learned to make vegetarian dishes that are every bit as tasty and satisfying as any meat dishes that I used to make.

The humane thing to do is let life live. Yes, we need to eat something, but why not eat a diet that minimizes the taking of life, and maximizes on enhancing our health and the health of the planet?

We, the Earth and the cows, will be happier for making the change.

I learned to cook only after I stopped eating animal products.
Before I ate to survive, now the food tastes so good, I look forward to preparing and eating my meals.

Now I've even startet picking those edible plants that grow around me in abundance, free food, right there and so few know.

But the very best thing about eating only plants is knowing you have stopped causing pain and suffering in others.

  2. I agree 100 % that living creatures not only deserve to not be eaten but deserve a life free from stress. My partner has just built a chicken coop for chickens which will be allowed to live each and every day until they die naturally. This is something I can do for sentient beings that is easy and loving. I am vegan and have been for many years for the same reason.

    1. Aww - a chicken sanctuary. I have never heard of one of those, and I love it. Compassion in practice.

Lucky chickens at your house. They just want to live and peck, peck and live.

There is an actual chicken sanctuary here in Denmark :) A woman rescues battery-chickens from getting gassed and adopts them to people who wants back-yard chickens <3 She does such an amazing work!

You can see her work here: http://www.frievinger.dk/ but probably most (all?) is in danish...

My family has been eating a plant based diet for 5 years now. My health has improved in many small ways (I didn't have any serious problems) and we're all thriving, including my 7 year old son. And while I realize this is just anecdotal, my son is definitely the healthiest child I know. He's very unusual in that he's never had an ear infection, been on antibiotics or been constipated. He's quite tall for his age and thriving. I say this to let other people know that a child can thrive on plants and that they don't need to eat dairy or meat or eggs to be very healthy. Plus, as you said, it feels so good to know you're not contributing to a cruel and environmentally damaging system. I also enjoy cooking more than I used to.

Can second this, our childrens health is much improved on a plant based diet. It's just so hard to watch other children get sick with the parents unaware that it's mostly dietary related. Alex

    2. We immediately noticed how much cleaner vegetarian cooking can be. No excessive fat and grease to contend with during and after. No toxic juices on your counter, cutting board, and utensils. When you really think about it, and look closely, preparing and eating meat is quite gross.

The body needs less protein than is commonly thought and if you have enough calories you will get enough protein. Protein is in bread, pasta and vegetables etc. Eating meat has an effect on the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. My personal theory of why meat is popular is that when an animal is put through absolute terror DMT is released in the blood stream and this is then taken in by consumers, this would explain why the most popular meats are terrorised in abattoirs and game meats and fish are less popular. Basically the more an animal is terrorised the more popular the meat creating a hierarchy. Thanks for the great post. Alex

    1. There is a definite protein overkill going on. Is it a macho hunter/warrior testosterone thing? Our boys and men are trained to believe they are still cave men bashing things over the head, dragging them home, and eating them. "That's just what men do."

A good dose of gardening can go a long way toward peaceful compassionate change.

The pineal gland and DMT are fascinating subjects. What you have added above in your comment makes a lot of sense to me. I have always wondered how people can work in slaughter houses. The places kill animals, but what effect do they have on the workers? Meat production and consumption is not good for any of the life forms involved.

I like my meals without all the violence.
