Spring Eating

Our fridge purged and cleaned after spring eating. No bad food surprises hiding here.

Spring cleaning our home is something we do most years around this time. We also usually do a bit of spring eating. Occasionally the two go together.

Last week our menu consisted of whatever was in our fridge. We vowed to not go food shopping till our fridge was purged of all aged food items. It is a good way to make sure that you have a 100% circulation of food so as to minimize waste and maximize nutrient content.

When doing our spring eating we eat what needs to be eaten rather than what we want to eat. It makes for some interesting cooking when sticking to only what is immediately available. Old apples? Apple crisp. Carrots, celery, green pepper, onions, tofu? Stir fry. Or add a can of tomatoes and make pasta sauce.

It lasted longer than we expected, too. We hadn't been to the food store for over two weeks by the time we ate through everything.

After we noshed our way through most everything in the fridge, I cleaned it from top to bottom. Being mostly empty, it was fairly easy and fast. When that was done we stocked up with fresh munchables.

Now the fridge is clean and fresh, just like the food it contains. Here's to new beginnings. And home cooked fresh, whole foods.

  1. In the colder months we have something called Friday soup. It consists of whatever veg are left over at the end of the week before we restock, some vegetable stock and something like red lentils for a bit of body. It's generally delicious!

    1. I like that idea, and lentils are an excellent way to add a bit of quick, cheap and tasty protein. Yum.

  2. You guys inspire me! Was just looking at my frig and thinking there is a lot going on in there. Lol! My freezer is the same. I make my cats food and freeze it. I' m way ahead. I drive to the city (15 miles away) and buy frozen fruit for my daily green smoothies. There's overstock of that right now and it hasn't been going down fast because I'm using more fresh fruit right now. But it is time to have a no-spend grocery week or two and get this inventory reduced.

I store flour and a lot of dry goods in my frig as well. Time to get those recycled too.

    1. "A lot going on there" - that's funny. You have to tame the beast every once in a while. Green smoothies are our favourite.

I did this once, quite awhile ago, and was able to skip the grocery store for at least a week. Plus, I kept quite a pile of food out of my compost pile. Thanks for the inspiration, I definitely need to do this again, my fridge is stuffed.

    1. It feels good to use food to its fullest. Better to digest than compost!

Someone shops for us once a week. I send a list and they bring home only those things. So my fridge never gets close to full. The freezer is another matter. I tend to freeze bits of leftovers and we freeze bread. It so happens my errand runner can't help this week, so it's a good time to eat what's in the freezer!

    1. Yup. We went through the freezer, too, although I think there is still a bag of green beans lurking in there. We use our freezer a lot - leftovers, and things we make on weekends and freeze in portions, are our "fast food". I like to have enough food on hand to last us weeks, if necessary (like if we don't feel like leaving our retreat in the countryside).
