Respite

"Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself?"
- Henry David Thoreau

Sometimes watching the spread of global consumeritis can be overwhelming. It can feel like there is no respite from onslaughts of bad news. The place I turn to for relief is nature.

When in natural areas I experience what naturalist John Muir wrote of the benefits of his forays into the wild, "worldly cares are cast out, and freedom and beauty and peace come in."

"We inter-breathe with the rain forests, we drink from the oceans.  They are part of our own body."
- Thich Nhat Hanh

How pleasant then to find an accessible forest bath worthy trail within walking distance of our new home outside of Digby, Nova Scotia.

My experience begins as soon as I open my front door. I turned our Welcome mat upside-down so that when I leave the house I am welcomed back into the great outdoors once again.

"Why thank you. It is good to return to your loving embrace. Take me away." And off I go.

"You didn't come into this world.  You came out of it, like a wave from the ocean.
You are not a stranger here."
- Alan Watts

I usually take a small camera so I can record things I see along the way to share with Linda when I return home after an hour or so of sweet nature relief.

"i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes"
- e.e. cummings

This week I felt well enough to hike all the way to a small waterfall at the end of the trail. After a short session of tranquil sitting on a mossy rock and merging with my surroundings, I returned home feeling rejuvenated and ready.

How do I spell relief? N-A-T-U-R-E.

The respite I find in nature is what allows me to find the grit that will be required to save it so that future generations may find solace here as well.

  1. Beautiful post...beautiful photographs. I've often thought hat I'd like to paint landscapes...but whatever I imagine is only a feeble imitation of the great designer's work.

    1. Charlotte,

We are being artistically inspired by our new surroundings. I may need to work on a painting, or poem, or song.

  3. I love that you turned your welcome mat around! And I agree there is nothing as relaxing or soothing as nature. I live near the mountains and it has been far to long since I ventured into them.

    1. Melodee,

So many of my favourite outdoor moments were in the mountains (Rockies). So majestic and tranquil at the same time. Magic.

Wow Gregg, that top photo of the tress put me in a trance, breath-taking picture. Love your photos of the creek, forest, moss covered rocks, quotes too. What a wonderful place, made more special by your words describing your experience there. Can't believe anyone could live walking distance from home to a place like this. Really spectacular.

I'm glad you have a way to share with Linda. I bet knowing you'll be sharing with someone special makes you enjoy being out there even more.

That looks like some complex geology that caused the waterfall with the joints and faults I can see in your photograph. Sometime email me and let me know the name of the forest, name of the waterfall if you know it. It would enjoy learning about if it wouldn't take away from your experience of being there. I love to discover the story that rocks have to tell. Our planet is one of great and mighty forces.

P.S. Hope you don't mind, I just made your tree picture my screen saver! Looks fabulous!

I didn't have good one since my computer crash recently wiped out everything. Your photograph is a fresh start! Very meditative view.

I had some visitors today who came to my computer to view some pictures I wanted to show them. They saw my screen saver (your picture of the trees) and all said WOW, where is that? Three of the admirers of your photograph were kids. Wanted to share with you how interested everyone was in your photograph. It really is special.
