White Friday

It's White Friday out there today.

It's White Friday here on the mountain, and wild horses pulling a sleigh-of-plenty couldn't drag me away from my warm and toasty home. Today Linda and I join the 3% of North Americans (or 91% of NBA readers) that will buck the trend and stay home on this most sacred of consumer holidays.

On this day the NBA commercial-free lifeboat floats tranquilly in a quiet corner of the Sea of Consumerism, proving that 'irresistible' deals are in fact quite resistible. We are not buying anything, which is not unusual, but it feels even better on a day like today.

It's White Friday and I am saving 100%. Plus I am not risking life and limb in a car accident on the way to spend money, or worse, in a frenzied stampede of crazed consumers competing for the latest hot deals.

Today is a perfect day to stay home. To celebrate the richness of home life. The simple life. The contented life.

Here is where you will find us on White Friday - right at home next to our wood stove.

We hope you are having a good White Friday, and proceed right on to a great weekend.

Stay warm. Stay strong.

  1. No shopping here either, Gregg! I taught for part of the day and spent the rest of it pottering around the house and reading - sheer heaven.

    1. Madeleine,

I never miss shopping, but I do miss teaching sometimes.

Amen, brother. Although I did have to work today, I came home after work, took a walk, enjoyed a brief gleam of sun, then put up the Christmas tree with my kids (a little early, but the snow on the ground put us in the Christmas spirit.) Your photo with this post is so beautifully calm, peaceful and inviting - it shows the true meaning of happiness, contentment, and the concept of "enough" This photo will be very inspirational for me to refer back to during the holiday season when it can be so easy to get caught up in the frenzy of spending, shopping, and general craziness. A wonderful post!

      Your day sounds wonderful.

This is a frenzy free zone all year long. Happy holidays.

  3. We spent the day moving into our new house. The last time we moved it was the big relocation and it cost us 4 thousand dollars. This time we're just driving two vans back and forth 10 miles each way until everything is shifted over. We may need professional help though with a couple of larger pieces. We did buy a rubber welcome mat for $3.50 yesterday, but only so we could cut it into squares to attach to the bottom feet of some furniture to protect the new laminate floor in the living room.

    1. Clamco,

How exciting. I hear you about the big relocation - it can be an expensive experience. Glad that your most recent move is more local and less expensive.

I like the rubber welcome mat idea - we may have to adopt that one to keep our furniture from damaging the floor and/or sliding around the room. Enjoy your new home.

amen, indeed. we have a small coffee group that meets after mass on weekdays. one of the nuns asked our little group if any of us were going shopping. there was a resounding 'no!' from everyone present. we were all heading straight home to relax, work on christmas cards, read books, do some baking . . . now that is something to celebrate!

How wonderful to have a group of like-minded individuals to meet with on a regular basis. It sounds like a great bunch that is keeping things nice and simple. A reason to celebrate for sure.

Nothing like time spent with those we love in our own cozy nest!

It seems more and more that people are choosing not go out on Black Friday. I haven't been in a mall or shopping center in over five years, can't imagine what it would be like this time of year. The news stories I've read say that there weren't as many people as in the past. Maybe the tide is truly turning.

    1. Miss Marla,

Everything and everyone is tapped out and change is in the air. Or is that snow?

The last time Linda and I went into a mall it was like a dream. A bad dream that smelled of plastic, floor wax, perfume and money.

Over-rated: shopping for stuff we don't need. Under-rated: Enjoying our own cozy nest.

    1. Charlotte,

Laughing together and with others is one of our most favourite activities.

The snow was nice, but was chased away by a warm air mass coming up the coast. I am sure it will be back, though. I am looking forward to some snow shoeing at some point this winter.

  7. We had a lovely pleasant day close to home. We did go out to lunch, but this is local restaurant, owned and run by people we know who work extremely hard, so I don't feel guilty about it.

Lets just call the people chiming in on this blog, what they really are.......CHEAP SKATES.
These are the same people who send those disgusting fruitcakes for christmas & those free
holiday cards charity organizations send in the mail.

Happy Kwanza ..... Long live Michael Brown (R.I.P)
