Having a selection of shelf-stable foods can provide a valuable sense of security and self-reliance. Fortunately, there are many nutritious foods that can be stored for extended periods with minimal effort.
Below is a checklist highlighting some of the best options to consider. Long-Lasting Foods Checklist ☐ Dried Beans and Legumes
Dried beans, lentils, peas, and other legumes are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and complex carbohydrates. Stored in airtight containers, they can last for many years.
☐ Whole Grains
Whole grains like wheat, oats, quinoa, and rice are filling, nutrient-dense, and have a much longer shelf life than their refined counterparts. Buy them in bulk and store in airtight containers. ☐ Canned Goods

Our pantry has less home canned foods, and more big bags of beans, rice, lentils, oats, and whole wheat flour. We also have garlic, winter squash, potatoes, onions, beets, carrots, and apples in our attached, unheated garage.

Not so much storage place in my home. So normally I stick to buying what I need, making sure I use it and fresh veggies on offer to save money. But I don't say no to this: yesterday just for fun after grocery shopping, nice weather and you'll never know what you find, went home cycling another way, maybe 3 minutes longer. What did I see turning into the first street resting against a tree? A 4,5 kilo bag of rice. Opened okay, but still way over 4 kilo's. I'm not afraid of using that, flush rice before cooking anyway. It will last me for months!
ReplyDeleteOur last place on the west coast was very small with no room for food storage or anything else. The home we moved to on the east coast has a pantry like we have never had before, and we love it. Way to go on the cycling... and rice. Nice find.

I like your list! I think high protein and fattening foods (in addition to canned veggies) are excellent options.
ReplyDeleteI comment often here but my Baba (Dad) grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp (he is 81) and was quite malnourished as a child. I still wonder how he survived. He tells me that growing up they relied on rations of rice, wholewheat flour, lentils, chickpeas, tahini, olives in olive oil, onions, potatoes, and whatever they could glean fresh and free (like dandelion types of greens).
I tend to keep beans, lentils, rice, tahini, tinned tomatoes, olives, olive oil, onions and potatoes on hand too. I also keep powdered milk like Nido brand. We also keep a supply of Tylenol (adult and kids) for fever/pain management, a basic medic kit, several gallons of water, and 3 life-straws for water filtration.
As my family says, “Trust in God, but always tie your own camel.” I hope events would not neceisstate dipping into emergency stores but it’s wise to be prepared.
Last note: Keep an eye on your emergency stash- don’t let it spoil or go to waste. Eventually even canned vegetables annd oil will turn rancid so consume it before it gets too old!
Some very good advice in your comment. Thank you for mentioning olives as they are another food that will last a very long time. We always have olives in our pantry. The water filter is also a very good bit of survival gear. So much better than bottled water.

Absolutely first class storage there. I'm slowly building my stockpile (most pickles, plus some sauerkraut) but it pales in comparison to this. Keep up the good work!
