Signs Of Spring

Nothing says spring like a roadside farm gate maple syrup stand.

I went for a ride down to the ocean today. As soon as I rolled my bike out of the garage and into the sun, I could feel that I had overestimated the temperature. It was much colder than it looked.

I put a toque on under my helmet. Halfway to the ocean I stopped and swapped my light gloves for a heavier pair because my fingers were getting cold and sore.

But regardless of the cool temperature, there were signs of spring all around.

When I got to the ocean I could see some diving ducks in the distance. While I brought my binoculars with me, it was too cold to relax and bird watch.

I boogied back home, and bought some maple syrup on my way. Tomorrow morning - pancakes.

It doesn't get more local than maple syrup from just down the road.

The cold can't keep these snowdrops down.

What's that? My first Robin of the year. Also saw my second, third, fourth, fifth...
it was a Robin-fest out there.

What are some of the signs of spring you are seeing in your area?

  1. Hi Gregg,

we are just moving into Autumn here in Oz. Although the leaves are starting to turn and the days are getting shorter, the temperature has been really hot - until this morning! I may even light the first fire of the year tonight :-)

I did my Winter planting yesterday - loads of root veg, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages and greens. Garlic will go in next, then onions. It's amazing how I still feel really excited after every new season planting - I think it's because I love eating so much!

    Happy Spring,

    Madeleine

    1. Wow. Your winter garden is better than my summer garden. Happy Fall.

  2. One sign of spring here in South Carolina is POLLEN! Lots of it!! It sometimes looks like yellow rain there is so much pollen flying around. Oh, my poor sinuses! The store shelves are nearly empty of all allergy remedies within a day or two of stocking. I try and see the positive side too. Bees are very busy! They seem drunk on pollen and quite preoccupied. No way would one stop to sting you right now. I love watching them. We have to have pollen for all the splendor spring brings, our food, trees, all of it. Wow, so many trees and flowers are starting to explode with color. It's magical. I'm loving the cooler spring temperatures this year. It is usually much warmer by now.

I'm listening to spring peepers and a few other kinds of frogs! It's been fun watching birds and squirrels building their nests. I'm a winter lover especially here in southeastern USA. I like when they leaves are gone from the trees so I can see the sky. It is less humid here in the winter and I love the softer light of the sun. But spring is pretty cool this year!

    1. We are listening for our first spring peepers here, but nothing yet. Not looking forward to the increased humidity of summer here, but I sure could use more warmth.

Nothing here exploding yet. It sounds like your spring is off to a great start.

Love all the changes in season from around the world, thanks all for posting/commenting. Spring here in western Oregon has the trees budding out, daffodils, hyacinth, and tulips are bursting into flower, song birds returning and the ducks leaving. And in a "normal" year - spring means rain...which it is doing right now. It's been a dry and rather warm winter here, so the rain is most welcome to get those reservoirs full for what is always a dry summer. Life is just popping out all over! Gregg, that is cool that you can buy maple syrup just down the road from your home! Happy Spring All! - Mary

    1. Oh my, we do miss that early west coast spring. In comparison, things are quite delayed here on the east coast of Canada. However, our falls can be extended, and beautiful. The snowdrops I saw were a wonder to behold. Such tenacious little flowers.
