Slower, Smaller, and Free

In the human world of faster, bigger, and more profitable, it is difficult to conceive of one based on slower, smaller, and free. But all we need to do is observe nature to see this is the way to go.

Over millions of revolutions on its axis, the earth builds mountains, and it wears them away. The geological time frame is so vast that a human life, in comparison, is like the breath of the buffalo on a winter day.

There is no inherent hierarchy of life with 'man' at the top. Any life is as important as any other life, and has an equal right to exist. That goes as much for blue whales as it does for microscopic organisms. All is important and vital to a functioning biosphere. It is often the smallest of things that have the greatest roles to play.

Before humans commenced large-scale exploitation of the land and everything on it and under it, all was free for everyone. It still could be. There is more than enough. Nature is endlessly abundant.

Nature can't be wrong. Slower, smaller, and free is the way to go.

    1. I would be happy to - it is an awesome idea that has spread around the world.

"The Little Free Library movement started with a Hudson man who built one in the shape of a one-room schoolhouse in honor of his mother, a retired teacher, and now more than 400 have sprung up like mushrooms around the country and overseas. Wisconsin, though, is the hotbed of Little Free Libraries with more than 100, including many in Madison though only a couple in the Milwaukee area."

ps I forgot to say - where my mother lives, the local public library has a similar scheme with jigsaw puzzles - you can take one to do and return it later, donate any that you no longer want etc with no time limit, and doesn`t have to be done through your library card like books do.

    4. namakemono,

The Little Free Library does say something about abundance - there are so many books in the world that people can give them away, and often throw them away. But like vegetables in the garden, books can be shared with others. So can jigsaw puzzles, and just about everything else.

Thanks for sharing. Glad you are enjoying the blog.
