Charles Bukowski’s poem “the shoelace” recommends we don’t sweat the big stuff:
"...it’s not the large things that
send a man to the
madhouse, death he’s ready for, or
murder, incest, robbery, fire, flood…
no, it’s the continuing series of small tragedies
that send a man to the madhouse…
not the death of his love
but a shoelace that snaps
with no time left…
the dread of life
is that swarm of trivialities…” Forget the headlines—USA, Russia, or the emergency of the hour. Bukowski’s point is sharper: it’s the snapped shoelace, the late bill, the broken zipper that grinds you down.
The small stuff, multiplied by a world hooked on excess, becomes a quiet killer.
Here’s the logic: simplicity can outsmart it.
Own less, and there’s less to fail you.
Slow down, and a busted lace won’t ruin your day.
Minimalism isn’t just a middle finger to the system—it’s a shield against that swarm.
So, what’s your shoelace? And what could you ditch to keep it from snapping?
Love It! Thanks for being you!

You get the prize for providing the most unlikely place a Charles Bukowski excerpt has popped up in recent weeks! Made me smile and made my day!
ReplyDeleteI picked up our Charles Bukowski Reader recently and have been completely enjoying not only his writing, but also the feel of holding an actual, real life book with paper pages and covers and everything. And, it doesn’t take any electricity in order to read it. It feels like being with an old friend.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed that.

Gregg, I only ever read "actual, real life book[s] with paper pages and covers and everything." Absolutely like being with an old friend. And the library is only 18 minutes away walking. Doesn't get much better than that!
DeleteThat is very wise. We dream of being within walking distance of a library, which in our rural location, is not possible. If we were to move closer to civilization, a close library would be at the top of our priorities. Enjoy your walks, your library, and all those wonderful books.
