“We have done what we could:
walked on these golden leaves let drop by the cycle of time,
touched by the gift of sight the purple asters by the road,
noted the ragged raven who sits in the old cottonwood,
uttering his dark-shadowed gutturals.
On this night a full-blown moon rises behind the mountain,
its light mixed with wood smoke, tree branches, and restless moving clouds.
All the loved world moves now toward the unfailing crest of time.
We have fulfilled the constant pattern;
we cannot stay the solstice.”

Keeping a daily journal, I had tucked a slip of paper with this little poem for solstice to glue into the journal today. Unfortunately, the writing is so small, I can't quite make out the poet's name...even with magnification my 57 year old eyes are unable to make it out. It appears to be "Reg Falconer, 2015" - Mary
ReplyDeleteThat all said, here is the poem.
We gather in the early blackness and deep cold of Winter Solstice.
Finding warmth in each other.
Turning darkness into a time of light.
Nourishing hope where reason fails.
Grateful for small miracles.
We rejoice in the wonder of making light out of darkness,
and the daring of hope.
That is beautiful. We should not shy away from the dark - it balances the light.
DeleteDays are getting longer!
