Stay Home

This wall of snow separates our house from our compost bin.
Doesn't everyone want to stay home on a day like today?

The winter storm over the past few days has been so severe that the police are asking everyone to "stay home". I think that is excellent advise during winter storms... or pretty much any other time.

I am always surprised at how people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) on a house and then spend all their time "going out" or on vacation somewhere else. If I paid that much for a house I would never leave it.

Luckily we have a reasonable rent, so I can leave any time I want. But I don't usually want to. Especially on days like today. It is a good time to sit by the fire and read. Or to crank up the oven and bake some bread.

Or have a coffee and talk with a friend. Listen to music. Play music. Play in the yard. Plan a garden. Or a revolution.

Your home should be such a wonderful place that it is better to be there than just about anywhere else. Don't stay home just because the police ask you to - stay home because it is your ultimate sanctuary.

That is seriously a LOT of snow! Yea, stay home! Who could go anywhere anyway?!

We're getting the same counsel from police here too. Though we had about 1/4 inch of ice/sleet/freezing rain the roads are clear and dry. Schools are cancelled, banks told people not to come to work, many restaurants, grocery stores, etc closed before dark. So weird when nearly all the streets are dry. Usually, they are quick to close things here in the south (USA), but I've never seen them pull down the shades over dry roads with temperatures above freezing. Someone somewhere must know something I don't. Things are scheduled to open tomorrow with a 2 hour delay. I know about black ice, but how can you have black ice with no water on the road? We're expecting some pretty cold temperatures next few nights, 5 F which is very cold for us. It will be record breaking if it drops that low. They will call for 2 hour delays over the cold too.

Odd thing I saw tonight on a South Carolina government website about emergency preparedness. They are directing folks to a South Carolina tourism site to find hotel rooms if they've been told the power won't be restored before nighttime. That seems odd to me. I have power and don't think there is much outage in the city I live in.

Love seeing your photos of the snow! Fun to learn about life in other places.

  2. That's a very impressive pile of snow! It has all melted here, although there is still lots in Scotland and the north of England. We are also lucky to have a home that we love. It's shameful to think that there are homeless people in a 'civilised' country like England...

Puts our snow fall to shame. We've not had much more snow lately, but it's supposed to get down to -20f overnight, with a wind chill making it feel even colder.

Today I'm enjoying the sunshine from my window. I haven't left the house in over a month now, and it's OK with me.

Yesterday I heard the crows on our roof chattering in their low and lovely way when they are talking to each other. I think they know Spring is on it's way!

Welcome to Siberia! Here in NE Ohio, we've been told that, even though the Great Lakes are pretty much frozen over, the evil lake effect snow and record-setting cold are very much with us. Since my car battery is dead, I'm staying home right now through necessity, but I've decided that, instead of having a hissy fit, I'm just going to go with the flow. Triple A will try to jump my battery, maybe the car will have to be towed, whatever. I have an alternate way in to work, so for now I'm going to sit by the window and peruse seed catalogues and plan my garden. I can see my containers from where I sit, and really, before I know it, Spring really will be here and I'll be planting those tomatoes and peppers. It's funny how fast I can forget all this snow and cold once Summer arrives! (And the time changes in just two weeks, so that helps, too.) Enjoy the day and appreciate what we all have.
