The Woods Are Calling

I have not been in the woods for some time; they beckon me.

For several weeks our weather has not been conducive to hiking, riding, or snowshoeing, limiting my outside activities. Besides some minor snow shovelling, I have been relying on inside physical activity to keep me going.

I tend to our home, which takes some effort, and I have resumed my previous practice of doing some yoga (sun salutations) in the morning. While I love it all, I most enjoy taking my exercise outside.

While out in nature, snowshoeing is one of my favourite activities. I have only been able to get out twice so far this season, definitely not the record-breaking snowfall of our first year in rural Nova Scotia.

This year I have had to make do with looking at previous snowy woods photos, including those in this post which were taken on my last outing, all the way back on winter solstice.

The past few days have been cold, and some snow has been falling. The ground is no longer bare and frozen, and the woods are accumulating a bit of a base of the white stuff.

However, I am dreaming of an epic, magical event that transforms everything into a muffled, quiet wonderland. I want to wake up tomorrow morning and see the woods transformed and waiting for me.

Then I can heed their call.

  1. We love to cross country ski and snow show, but no snow here at all.

  2. I feel the quiet wonderland in your splendid pictures. I hear the wondering about not being out more. I have periods where I am outside less too. Currently I am longing deeply to be outside more. And I've started doing just that. I am more calm and feel more continued and peaceful since being out more. A mindfulness group I've just begun attending is enhancing nature experiences.

I watched the spectacular lunar eclipse Sunday night for 5 hours. It was very cold (for here). I live in an apartment complex and there wasn't a good place to view. So I drove around the night before the eclipse and found a couple of nice, safe spots to park and view. Finding a viewing location that is safe and one where law enforcement wouldn't show up and tell me to leave was no easy task. Most parks close gates at sunset. But I was very lucky and scored a nice dark parking lot in a good area where I felt very safe.

I bundled up in a warm coat, brought my sleeping bag along to cover with and set out for the evening. Once parked, I moved my seat back and laid back to enjoy the entire eclipse! WOW! How quiet my mind got is indescribable. I love being outside late at night. It gets so quiet when the airplanes quit flying and the cars stop moving on asphalt roads. I have to find a way to be outside at night more often. I might have to figure out how to afford more camping trips or something.

Gregg, you are in your element when you are outside, most especially when it snows and you are snowshoeing in nature. I too am in my element outside but especially outside at night. I love watching the sky, the moon and all things nighttime! My favorite thing in nature is seeing the moon's reflection on water, especially on lake water. I've rambled enough. Here's to all of us getting out more! Cheers everyone!
