Staying At Home

In a consumer society all the good stuff is "out there". The thing to do is go out and get it, whatever it is. Staying home is not recommended. You can't spend money and access the good stuff if you don't go out.

Fear of missing out is one way they pry us out of our comfy nests. If you don't go out, you will miss out. They want us out and about as much as possible. This is because when one goes out, one must spend money.

"Which is worth more, a crowd of thousands,
or your own genuine solitude?
Freedom, or the power over an entire nation?
A little while alone in your room
will prove more valuable than anything else
that could ever be given you"
- Rumi

Go to a movie. Go out for food. Go to a concert. Go to a bar. Go for coffee. Go for a vacation. Go to town. Go shopping. Go here, go there. Go, go, go. Buy, buy, buy. Repeat.

Don't go to a park, that is free. If you do, buy something to take with you first.

Instead of going out, we should spend more time staying at home and going in. The answers are not "out there". The answers don't cost anything. Freedom is here at home.

Don't be afraid - you aren't missing anything by not going out, and you may gain everything by spending a little time alone in the comfort of your own home.

I've always been a bit of a home person, I'm often happier at home writing, playing guitar or playing a game than I am out and about and, like you say, it saves me money!

It also ties to people needing learn to be content with what they have, what is right in front of them. If you appreciate what you already have you won't go out and buy more.

That Austen quote is one of my favourites!

It's interesting how in just one generation we have been convinced that we need to go out and spend money as often as possible. Other than shopping for food, I could count on one hand how often we went out when I was a kid - staying home was completely normal and everybody did it!

I don't feel I'm missing anything by staying at home, and also love to cook and invite friends to eat together. I am lucky enough to have friends who also like to stay at home - we can spend many hours drinking tea, talking and laughing. Who could want for more?

    1. Madeleine,

I also remember a much more home-focused life in my youth. Now I haven't been away from home for anything but groceries for months. Linda and I are where we want to be - where is there to go?

If we do drive away from here, it is usually always to access natural areas, like go down to the beach. We pack a lunch, and don't need to buy anything.

Loving to cook reduces the need to go out to get something to eat. People used to cook more when we were young, but that has changed. If you don't like to cook, or don't know how, you would need to go out more often to buy sustenance. It is very expensive, and the quality is known to be lacking.

Going out can be dangerous to you health!

  3. Staying home all the time was hard for me at first. I missed going out to dinner with friends, or just being out in the world. Now I'm content at home. I still don't like to cook though!

  5. I love being at home. It's modest but it's my haven. The older I get the less the outside world appeals. In these crazy and sometimes scary times, it's comforting to have a safe refuge for our family.

  6. I have to say I have always loved to stay at home. My home is a lovely place to be. Many people over the years have questioned that I must be bored. I can't say I've ever been bored. But more importantly I do not understand the concept that unless one is doing something outside your home that costs money, you're not really living. I like to think, to meditate, to have meaningful conversations,to cook,to read, to learn, to craft, and learn from your blog. Bored, never!
