Catching Up

This healthy, happy moment brought to you by your positive thoughts and comments.

Dear NBA readers (NBAers, NBAanistas, NBAists...),

I am taking this Saturday morning to get caught up on some responses to your wonderful comments. I like to respond to all comments as often as possible, but sometimes it is difficult. Like during and after the hospital visit Linda and I had the first two weeks of September.

So as I reread comments today I am blown away all over again. I left a general comment on my post Cut Own Hair... Again, and because it expresses my feelings about all the comments left on NBA, I thought I would put it in a post for all to see.

I am humbled by the wonderful words expressed here, and thank all of you for taking the time (especially first time commenters - welcome aboard).
Things have improved a great deal since I wrote this post. My back has been rapidly improving although I imagine it will be tender for months to come. I am implementing a walking and yoga exercise/stretching program to help heal and stay strong.
Linda has been getting better, too. It seems strange to report this because the medical establishment would say that people with secondary multiple sclerosis don't get better. But there you go.
Call it the power of positive thinking, or CCSVI treatment, or love, or most likely a combination of all, but both of us are feeling healthier.
Thank you all for your contribution to our successful recoveries.

NBA friends, you enhance our world. Funny, because when we started this blog our goal was to enhance the world in our small way. We did not anticipate the degree to which that would come back to us.

Health and happiness to you and yours. And keep the comments coming. We would like this to be a safe place for all of us to meet, share, and support one another. And have fun and laugh and sing and dance.

I'm so very happy to read that you and Linda are doing so much better. You have both had a rough time but your love and strength have helped you through. This blog helps me as well - your wonderfully sensible and intelligent viewpoint keeps me going when I feel that I am woefully out of step with mainstream culture. And your great sense of humor is very welcome, too! I really feel that, slowly but surely, a simpler and quieter lifestyle movement is taking hold in our world, helped by writers and bloggers like you. I hope to see your wonderful blog here for a good long time.

    1. Sophie,

We are so happy that our work here is of help to you in your life. It is good to know that we are not alone in our alternative lifestyle choice, and that there are good reasons for living simply.

I think you are right and what is now seen as fringe will one day be seen as the only way to live and thrive on our finite planet. I also believe that momentum is growing and that the frugal sensibilities and sensitivities we had 50 or 60 years ago is returning.

I also hope that NBA is around for a long time to come, just as I hope NBA readers stick with us and help spread the word.

It seems counterintuitive to those desiring more everything, but life is indeed better with less. There is lots of evidence out there, like the photo at the top of this post. Or, the many comments here that attest to the fact that a simpler, quieter lifestyle is the way to go for ourselves, the planet, and everything on it.

  2. That's truly wonderful news about Linda...may she improve in leaps and bounds...your back too! I believe that health issues arise from a combination of the bodies we were born with and how we shape them with our lifestyle over the years. You have completely changed your lifestyle...so it makes sense that your bodies will change too. Nothing is necessarily as irreversible as the medical establishment would have us believe...so continue to enjoy your lovely new home, stay minimalist, bask in the love and think positive! Cx

    1. CharlotteP,

I like your thinking, and totally agree with it's logic. It makes sense - good people, good surroundings, and good thoughts lead to good health.

I think you're both doing better because the past stresses of the move and the unknown are behind you and you're happy where you are (and from the pictures who wouldn't be happy where you are!). That's a prescription for good health and all the miracles life has to offer. My husband has spinal stenosis and pulls his back out occasionally (usually during stressful situations) and he's found that using a heating pad as often as possible helps a lot. Good luck and much happiness to both of you - and try not to pay too much attention to those in the medical profession. They are wonderful when you need them, but they have a tendency to put a negative spin on things so you won't be too disappointed if things don't work out. I say hope for the moon and the stars, you might get them.

    1. Anon,

Yes, yes, and yes. I have also found a heating pad to be of great benefit - much better than pain killers for certain types of pain. Sometimes alternating heat and cold works well. Hope your husband is doing well.

When the medical system gets things right it is awesome. When it get things wrong it can take a long time to move on to better treatments.

Dealing with MS is tough for everyone, including neurologists, since the system has little to offer except for pharmaceuticals for symptom relief, and many of them are of questionable effectiveness (and are very expensive).

We are very hopeful that both of us will remain healthy for a good long time, and hope you and yours do so as well.

Thrilled that the two of you are feeling better! The medical establishment knows so little about most disease processes, they can't predict what will or won't happen to any individual. I know I'm walking better now than I have in years, when I was told a decade ago that I would be in my wheelchair permanently in 2 years.

So grateful to you both, Gregg and Linda, for sharing your life with us and expending the time it takes for these wonderful posts.

  6. Hi Gregg,

I was really touched by your post today, and am so happy to hear you are both getting better. As for Linda's multiple sclerosis, there are people all over the world getting better, when they were told they couldn't - miracles are happening every day. My own experience with serious illness is that stress can be a major trigger, whilst living according to your values and having lots of love and joy can make things improve, sometimes miraculously. I'm sure things will continue to get better and better for you both :)
